The Garden Route's whole appeal is variety packed into a small space. You can genuinely bungee off the world's highest bridge in the morning and be eating cake in a countryside café by three - nature lovers, adrenaline seekers, families and people who just want to sit somewhere beautiful all find their version of this route.
Here are 15 of the best things to do, from west to east.
1. Watch (or swim with) Cape fur seals in Mossel Bay
Boat trips out to the seal colonies are a Mossel Bay staple. Fair warning: it's a fairly pungent experience up close, in the best possible way.
2. Walk a stretch of the St Blaize Trail
A dramatic clifftop coastal trail between Mossel Bay and Dana Bay. You don't need to do the full 13.5km - walk out for an hour and turn back whenever the view satisfies you.
3. Go whale watching between June and November
Southern right whales migrate along this entire coastline in winter and spring, and you don't need a boat to see them - several shore-based viewpoints put you within easy sight of breaching whales.
4. Kayak up to a hidden waterfall in Wilderness
One of the most memorable half-days on the whole route: paddle up a river gorge, then walk the last stretch to a secluded waterfall you can swim in.
5. Visit Wild Oats Community Farmers' Market in Sedgefield
Widely considered the best market on the entire Garden Route, and arguably one of the best in the country. Go early, on a Saturday, and don't eat breakfast first.
6. Cruise or kayak the Knysna Lagoon
The lagoon and its famous Heads - two sandstone cliffs guarding one of the most treacherous natural harbour entrances in the world — are worth seeing from the water, not just the shore.
7. Walk (part of) the Robberg Peninsula
Widely rated as the best coastal hike on the entire route, and arguably in the country. Cliff views, a pristine beach, and a seal colony you'll smell before you see. There are options for every fitness level, from a relaxed 2km loop to a challenging half-day hike.
8. Explore the ancient Knysna forest
Home to the country's last free-roaming forest elephants (sightings are genuinely rare, but knowing they might be out there changes how a forest walk feels) and criss-crossed with trails through centuries-old indigenous woodland.
9. Snorkel with seals in Plettenberg Bay
A proper bucket-list experience - the seals tend to be far more curious about you than the reverse.
10. Taste your way along the Plettenberg Bay wine route
A handful of cool-climate wine farms within twenty minutes of town, producing genuinely good sparkling wine and sauvignon blanc. Easiest half-day on the whole route, and most are welcoming to families.
11. Walk the Storms River suspension bridge
The Garden Route's most iconic short walk: a stable boardwalk out to a dramatic swaying bridge over the river gorge, suitable for pretty much any fitness level.
12. See the Big Tree
An Outeniqua yellowwood estimated at over 800 years old, reached by a ten-minute wheelchair-friendly boardwalk through indigenous forest. It was already ancient when Europeans first landed at the Cape.
13. Jump off the world's highest bridge (or watch someone else do it)
Bloukrans Bridge hosts the world's highest commercial bungee jump, at 216 metres. If jumping isn't for you, watching from the pub next to the bridge is free and almost as entertaining.
14. Lilo or kayak the Storms River gorge
A cooler-weather alternative to the bungee crowd: paddling beneath towering cliffs, with snorkelling options along the way.
15. Find at least one hidden gem
This route has a handful of genuinely secret spots that most visitors walk straight past — tidal pools, secluded beaches, and rock formations that don't show up on the standard tourist map. Ask locally, or come prepared with directions.
The honest advice
You cannot do all fifteen of these in one trip without turning your holiday into a checklist. Pick a handful that match what you actually want from the trip — adventure, wildlife, food, or simply slowing down - and build your route around those, rather than trying to see everything.
