Garden Route Road Trip: The Complete Route from Mossel Bay to Storms River
One road ties the whole Garden Route together: the N2. Everything worth stopping for is a short detour off it, which is exactly why this route is so easy to travel badly - and so rewarding to travel slowly.
Here's the full route, town by town, so you can actually plan it instead of just following a GPS blindly.
The route, west to east
The Garden Route officially runs from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape to Storms River in the Eastern Cape - around 300 kilometres of coastline, forest and mountain, all within an hour or two of each other. Most people fly into George, which sits almost exactly in the middle, so you can head out in either direction.
The rough shape of it:
- Mossel Bay — the western gateway, seals, caves and the start of the coastal cliff trails
- George — the region's transport hub, with the nearest airport
- Wilderness — lakes, rivers and some of the easiest whale-watching on the coast
- Sedgefield — officially South Africa's first "Slow Town," and the best market morning on the whole route
- Knysna — the lagoon town, famous for its Heads and its forests
- Plettenberg Bay — beaches, the Robberg peninsula, and the wine route
- Nature's Valley — small, quiet, and easy to drive straight past if you're not paying attention
- Storms River / Tsitsikamma — ancient forest, suspension bridges, and the world's highest bridge bungee
Roughly how long each leg takes
Without stopping (which you shouldn't do anyway):
- Mossel Bay → George: around 35 minutes
- George → Wilderness: about 15–20 minutes
- Wilderness → Knysna: around 45 minutes
- Knysna → Plettenberg Bay: about 35 minutes
- Plett → Storms River: around 50 minutes
Add it all up and you get roughly 2.5 hours of pure driving for the entire 300km stretch - which tells you everything about why this is a "go slow" route, not a "get there" one.
Fuel and charging
Fuel is easy the whole way, with stations in every major town. If you're driving electric, you're in luck: EV charging is now reliable at George, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, making this one of the more manageable South African road trips to do without a combustion engine.
One thing worth knowing before you set off: not every town between the big stops has fuel. Assume nothing between the main hubs and fill up when you're at half a tank, not when the light comes on.
The detour question
The N2 is the fast way through. It is not the interesting way through. Several of the best stretches of this route are the roads that run parallel to it - old passes, forest tracks and coastal back-roads that most rental-car drivers skip entirely because the GPS doesn't suggest them.
If you only take one detour on the whole trip, make it a road rather than a destination - the alternative route between Knysna towns is consistently rated as one of the most scenic stretches on the entire Garden Route, and it costs you almost no extra time.
Should you rent a 4x4?
No. A normal hatchback or small sedan handles this entire route comfortably. A few of the detour roads are gravel, but they're well-maintained gravel, not off-roading - the only requirement is slowing down properly when the tar ends, not a bigger vehicle.
Heading further west?
If you've got extra time, Route 62 runs inland on a parallel line to the Garden Route, joining it near Oudtshoorn. It's a genuinely good way to loop back toward Cape Town instead of driving the N2 twice.
