How Many Days Do You Need on the Garden Route?

If you've started Googling this, you've probably already noticed the problem: everyone's answer is different. Some blogs say three days is plenty. Others insist you need two weeks. The truth depends entirely on what kind of trip you're after — but there is a real, honest answer, and it's not "it depends" dressed up to avoid committing.

We've driven the Garden Route more times than we can count, in everything from a rooftop-tent bakkie to a rented hatchback, in peak summer and in the quiet grey of a Cape winter. Here's what we've learned about timing it right.

The short version

  • 3 days — doable, but you're picking one region and skipping the rest
  • 5 days — the minimum that doesn't feel like a highlight reel on fast-forward
  • 8 days — the sweet spot most people wish they'd booked
  • 10+ days — lets you loop inland to Route 62 and Oudtshoorn as well

Why the Garden Route tricks people into under-planning

Here's the thing that catches almost everyone out: the whole route is only about 300 kilometres end to end, which is under four hours of driving without stopping. On paper, that looks like an easy long weekend. In practice, it's the reason people rush it and regret it.

The distance is short. The list of things worth stopping for is not. Golden beaches, ancient indigenous forest, dramatic mountain passes and quiet lagoons all sit within an hour or two of each other — which means every single day offers you three or four genuinely different things to do, not just more of the same coastline. Drive it like a normal road trip (point A to point B, stop for photos) and you'll spend four days seeing what should take eight.

What each timeframe actually gets you

Three days works if you pick a base — George or Knysna, roughly the midpoint — and explore outward rather than trying to drive the whole stretch. You'll get a real taste of the lakes, one lagoon town, and either the western or eastern highlights, but not both. This is the "long weekend from Cape Town" trip, and it's genuinely worth doing if that's all the time you have. Just don't try to see Mossel Bay and Tsitsikamma in three days — that's the mistake that turns a relaxing trip into a windscreen tour.

Five days is the real minimum for doing the whole route without feeling rushed. You're still moving most days, but you get at least one proper hike, one full beach day, and time to actually eat at the places worth eating at rather than whatever's open near the highway.

Eight days is where the trip stops feeling like a checklist. This is enough time for two nights in each of the main hubs — enough to arrive, settle, explore properly, and leave without immediately missing the place. It's also enough slack to let weather-dependent things (kayaking, paragliding, low-tide walks) actually happen on the day conditions allow, rather than forcing them into a schedule.

Ten-plus days opens up the inland detour — the Outeniqua Pass up to Oudtshoorn, and from there Route 62 running parallel back toward Cape Town. Worth it if you don't want to drive the N2 twice.

The rule that actually matters

Every guide will give you distances and drive times. The number that matters more is this: give yourself no more than 90 minutes of driving on any single day, and always be parked before sunset. The Garden Route's distances are so short that anything more usually means you're skipping the reason you came in the first place.

So, how many days?

If we're being straight with you: eight days is the number we'd book if it were our trip and our budget. It's the difference between "we drove the Garden Route" and "we actually experienced it." But five days done slowly beats eight days done at a rush every time — the trick isn't the number of days, it's resisting the urge to fill every one of them.
