So here's our honest answer, based on a route we've driven more times than we can count, camped along, hiked alone, and left a rental car parked at every trailhead in this guide: the Garden Route is one of the safest, most visited stretches of the country, and a handful of simple habits make it safer still. Nothing here should stop you doing anything you've been planning.
The truth is in between
Locals sometimes wave safety concerns away entirely. International visitors sometimes arrive braced for something dramatic. Neither is quite right. This is a well-travelled tourist route with genuine infrastructure — hospitals, tourism police presence in the bigger towns, and a steady flow of visitors — not a frontier. But it's also a real place, not a theme park, and treating it with the same sensible caution you'd use in any unfamiliar city goes a long way.
What actually causes problems (and it's not what you'd think)
The single most common thing that ruins a Garden Route trip isn't crime. It's the sun — the UV index here regularly hits extreme levels, and the sea breeze disguises it completely. Sunburn benches more travelers than anything else on this list.
After that, it's smash-and-grab at traffic lights in bigger towns, which is almost entirely preventable: nothing visible on the seat, windows up, and a gap ahead of you so you're never boxed in. It's also the reason for one very simple rule — pack your boot before you arrive somewhere, not in the parking lot, so nothing goes into it in view of anyone.
Habits worth having
A short list, and none of it is complicated:
- Keep car doors locked while driving, especially at intersections in bigger towns
- Hike popular trails in company — the busy ones are genuinely busy, and that's exactly why they're fine
- Use guarded parking at trailheads and beaches where it's offered (a small tip to a car guard is completely normal here, and it works)
- Ask your host "where shouldn't we walk after dark?" — you'll get a specific, useful answer every time
- Avoid driving mountain passes after dark, more for animals and unlit potholes than anything else
If something does happen
If you're ever in a situation where someone wants your phone or bag: give it up. It's replaceable, and no local will expect or want you to resist. Report it at the nearest police station afterward for a case number — your travel insurer will need it, and it's a straightforward process.
