There’s nothing quite like discovering those perfect little spots that just make a road trip. Recently, we stayed at two incredible places in the Western Cape, and honestly, we couldn’t wait to share them with you!
First up is Kokerboom House in Vanrhynsdorp, a small town that really comes alive during South Africa’s wildflower season (August to September). If you’ve never been to this part of the country during that time, trust me, the landscapes are like something out of a dream, completely covered in vibrant flowers.
Kokerboom House is such a cozy guesthouse! The rooms are super spacious and all come with en-suite bathrooms, which is always a plus. There’s also a big living area with a comfy TV lounge, a dining room, and a kitchen that has everything you need if you like to cook while you travel. But what we really loved was the splash pool. It’s a lifesaver on those hot days! 😎 And if you’re like us and love a good stroll through a nursery, there’s one right on-site, along with a restaurant that serves up some delicious breakfast and lunch options.
Vanrhynsdorp itself is the perfect base for exploring the wildflowers, but even when the blooms aren’t around, it’s still a fantastic spot for a little getaway. We spent our mornings hiking the local trails and then just chilled out by the pool in the afternoons. It’s such a peaceful place to unwind and escape the city life for a bit. So, if you’re planning a road trip, especially during wildflower season, definitely add Kokerboom House to your list! 🌸
Next, we made our way to Lambert’s Bay, where we stayed at On the Dune by Grootvlei. This place… wow. It’s the kind of seaside escape that makes you never want to leave. The house is literally right on the beach, with stunning views of the ocean. Every room has an en-suite bathroom and the living spaces are huge, with a full kitchen and plenty of braai areas. Perfect for those long, lazy summer evenings.
But the best part? The marine life! We saw whales, dolphins, and seals – and we’re talking hours of just watching them from the deck. It was unreal. When the tide is low, there are tons of rock pools to explore too. Just make sure you pack reef shoes, so your feet don’t get roughed up by the rocks.
What’s great about On the Dune is that you can book a room for a romantic couples’ weekend, or, if you’re planning a family holiday or a trip with friends, you can book out the entire house. It’s such a flexible space. We honestly had the best time here – between the beach, the braai, and the whales, it was such a memorable trip. Whether you’re after a laid-back family holiday or a romantic seaside getaway, this place is a winner.
So, who’s coming with you on your next adventure? Let us know who you’d love to bring along to these fantastic spots! 🌊🐳🌸
