There’s something timeless about the mountains of Swellendam. They rise softly but powerfully on the horizon, holding within them endless trails, waterfalls, and quiet corners of nature that seem to slow the world down. Tucked at their feet, just a short stroll from the heart of town, lies a place that captures this spirit perfectly – The Glen Stud Farm, a collection of charming family cottages that blend homely comfort with the raw beauty of the outdoors.
Our stay was in Drifting Dusk, a cosy four-sleeper cottage that immediately feels like a warm hug. With two bedrooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom, it’s the ideal space for families or couples travelling together. The cottage is designed for slowing down and soaking it all in – there’s a fully equipped kitchen for easy meals, indoor and outdoor seating to savour your morning coffee with a view, and two braai areas for lazy afternoons that stretch into evenings under the stars. Every door opens to a postcard-worthy view of the farm, horses and the tranquil dam below.
What makes The Glen Stud Farm truly special is how it opens the door to adventure right on your doorstep. Guests have free access to the Marloth Nature Reserve, one of the Western Cape’s most beautiful natural playgrounds. Whether you’re here for a gentle stroll or a day-long trek, the reserve’s network of trails offers something for everyone. Don’t miss the 2km waterfall trail (Duiwelsbos Waterfall) – it’s an easy yet rewarding walk that leads you to a hidden cascade surrounded by forest and birdsong. On warm days, the dam invites you to swim, kayak, or simply sit back on the banks and watch the reflections ripple across the water.
And when you want a taste of local life, you’re just a five-minute walk from Swellendam’s charming town centre, where cafés, bakeries, and little shops line the streets. It’s the perfect blend of wilderness and convenience – wild beauty at sunrise, cappuccinos and croissants by mid-morning.
Adding to the charm, The Glen Stud Farm sits on a working thoroughbred horse farm, where foaling season brings an extra touch of magic. Watching mares and their new foals grazing in the fields just beyond your cottage is a memory that lingers long after you leave – a gentle reminder of the rhythms of life that move quietly here.
The Glen Stud Farm offers the kind of stay that reconnects you with the simple things – fresh air, open skies, long walks, and the joy of slowing down. It’s not just a place to sleep; it’s a place to breathe deeply, explore freely, and feel wonderfully far away from everything.
